Educational and Therapeutic Approaches

Courses:
Autism | Autism

May 2011 | 200 pages | SAGE Publications Ltd

There are a number of different approaches and therapies available for children, young people and adults on the autistic spectrum, and the amount of information available on each one can be daunting for professionals and parents alike. Autism, Educational and Theoretical Approaches offers concise and clear explanations of a variety of proposed interventions and their effectiveness, and helps the reader to decide on the most appropriate treatment for each individual.

Efrosini Kalyva provides accessible information about recent scientific evidence and the latest research, and allows you to consider the pros and cons of each approach. She focuses on the following areas:

  • cognitive-behavioral approaches
  • developing social interaction
  • alternative communication strategies
  • developing play
  • sensory-motor approaches
  • psychotherapeutic approaches
  • biochemical approaches

This much-needed guide for practitioners and student teachers will also appeal to interested parents, and to anyone looking for a comparative examination of the variety of treatments on offer.

'Author Efrosini Kalyva...writes about recent scientific research and allows the reader to consider the pros and cons of each approach so they can decide which ones to use'
-Autism Eye

'This book is a deeply informed and knowledgeable compendium of practice which offers the reader a balanced and well described account of the most prominent interventions available. Dr. Kalyva writes in an accessible and engaging way bringing to each approach a healthy scepticism and an enquiring mind. Crucially, this book regards the person with autism holistically and skilfully distils the theoretical into the pragmatic as we are encouraged to be selective in the approaches we adopt. This book is realistic, optimistic and leads us towards an understanding of the most appropriate interventions available for each individual with autism' -
Martin Hanbury, Headteacher and Author

'The author has chosen to enlarge on deal(sic)ing with the whole child not just the child as a learner. This is an important point to consider as an educator and one that is often hard to incorporate in a curriculum-driven world...this book fulfills its title perfectly and gives time to all the majour approaches in the filed of autism. It is a good read for parents, an interesting and thought-provoking read for professionals and a must for any students researching or begining to take an interest in the world of autism'
Lora Storey, Special (NASEN)

Therapy for any childhood disorders is the key that enables the child to make meaningful contact with his world. This is an excellent book for parents, teachers, therapists and post-graduate students in psychology and education to know about all therapies available and provides practical examples of activities that could be included in a therapy program. A must read for everyone that has the privilege to be part of the journey of a child diagnosed with autism.

This is a very easy to comprehend book which has assisted my students in their study into Autism.
For the Psychology student it contains detailed and accurate information and portrays suitable and recognised interventions.

The information is clear and extremely useful for tutors (experienced and inexperienced) working with students on the Autistic Spectrum.

The language of the book is clear and easy to understand.

A very interesting book but too academic for the majority of my students to access. I learned loads though!

This is a particularly useful book as it clearly explains the range of issues impacting on people with autism and their careers, and for social work practtioners. All students should be made aware of thsi book, particularly in preparation for placment.

This was a helpful book with the stated aim of promoting a healthy scepticism in the readers about interventions for Autism. It covers a range of potential interventions and provides a critique of the evidence for and against. This generally comes across as objective and well-balanced. There is little mention of the high levels of co-morbidity of ASD and intellectual disability and how interventions might need to be adapted (or not) in light of this. For this reason I would not suggest the book for students on an intellectual disability course.

This is an interesting book on a contemporary topic. It is well researched and covers both theoretical and practical approaches to supporting children with autism.
