- Anne-Wil Harzing - Middlesex University London, UK
- Helene Tenzer - Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, Germany
Used by over 25,000 students across 130 countries, this bestselling text, written by leading international experts in each topic, retains its critical edge, academic rigour and breadth of coverage in the new fifth edition.
The new edition reflects the contemporary debates and emerging issues in the field of International HRM, supplementing classic theories and models with recent research and international developments. Divided into three parts, the first section looks at the ways of thinking about IHRM theory and practice; the second section deals with multinational companies and how they manage their workforce around the world; the final section looks at both traditional and newer approaches to IHRM policies and practices.
A selection of up-to-date examples from across the globe are used to support the text, including Uber’s regulatory challenges across Europe, the gig economy, employment rights after Brexit, health insurance for part-timers in the US and EU, attracting and retaining ‘millennials’, the world’s happiest and unhappiest countries, and CSR in Hong Kong.

In the 5th edition of International Human Resource Management, Sebastian Reiche, Anne-Wil Harzing, and Helene Tenzer continue to set the standard for texts in the area. The volume is comprehensive in its coverage, bringing together an authoritative international author team. A key strength of the volume is balancing intellectual rigour and accessibility in the content and the authors achieve this in each of the chapters. This is a must read far anyone wishing to understand what is currently happening in international HRM.
Having taught international human resource management for many years, I have always struggled to find an appropriate text that is grounded in research and that is comprehensive in covering the complexities of managing people across borders. With this collection of chapters, each of which is written by experts in their respective fields, my quest is over! I especially like the emphasis given to the greater cultural, institutional, and organizational contexts in which MNCs operate as well as the challenges of managing expatriates and host country employees around the world.
I've found this book while generally helpful, really quite limiting too. I am teaching African students both in the UK and based in Africa, who are researching and working within African organisations and aside from a single mention of South African legislation from 2001 (which applies to just one quite distinctive country) there is nothing meaningful that applies to students from this continent, which is really disappointing given its title which suggests international perspectives.
I liked the topics and case studies. Instructor materials could be more robust.
Very comprehensive textbook that comes with complementary online resources. I would recommend it for both UG and PG IHRM courses.
