- Mario Hesse - St Cloud State University, USA
A brief yet thorough introduction with an emphasis on real-world issues
Briefer and less expensive than traditional core textbooks, Juvenile Justice: The Essentials provides a current, thought-provoking introduction to juvenile justice, juvenile delinquency, the challenges of reducing juvenile crime, and of providing equal and fair justice for all juvenile offenders. Offering a comprehensive yet concise overview of the field's most important concepts and issues, authors Richard Lawrence and Mario Hesse include cutting-edge research; practical examples of juvenile justice in action; and up-to-date coverage of laws, policies, and programs in juvenile justice. Engaging pedagogical features illustrate true-to-life cases, policies, and practices that capture student interest by vividly responding to the "So what?" question of how delinquency theories apply in the real world.
"My overall assessment of this project is one of success! The text is well-presented and done so with clarity and a style that makes for easy reading and limited confusion. It takes the reader from a non-system to considerations for a future in juvenile justice. The strengths of this work are founded on clear, understandable language and a viewpoint of unbiased desire to present the most current and relevant information possible. As for weaknesses, generally speaking, I could find none."
The book is straightforward and easy for undergraduate and introductory students to comprehend.
Haven't made a decision yet.
I like the brevity and simplicity, but think students will miss out without some more depth. I also like the discussion questions and case in point boxes. I'm going to try to find a text that goes into more detail on delinquency, which this text understandably is not able to do. I need more of that for this particular course.
I adopted this text because I believe it is a thorough, concise text that covers all of the important topics in Juvenile Justice. It is also student-friendly because it is shorter and it is paperback which means it is less expensive for them to purchase. I also appreciate the instructor site where I can access test banks and PowerPoints.
This book contains very relevant conceptual and theoretical explanations. It also provide a fundamental outline of the historical organization of juvenile justice in the western hemisphere which are relevant to localized teaching and learning. It is also provide very appropriate teaching and learning activities for instructors and students.
The price was the ulimated decideing factor, the book was equal to others that I saw available
I liked the copy I saw my students had for another class with another teacher. Please send my copy quick.
