Key Concepts in Tourism Research

May 2012 | 200 pages | SAGE Publications Ltd
This book walks students through the selection and application of research methods within tourism. The authors introduce the relevant language and theory of key methodologies and then develop them using strategic literature review and the inclusion of international examples which relate directly to tourism. The historical and philosophical context of each method is then carefully laid out alongside the practical application of the technique. Each concept sets the historical and philosophical context of a method alongside the practical application of the technique.

This is a comprehensive text which encompasses consideration of a broad range of concepts and techniques of relevance to scholars of tourism. The book provides a basic, yet very valuable insight into core research methods for the tourism and hospitality industry. The book is very well structured and clearly delivers workable insights into various research approaches, their value and possible pitfalls, as well as examples of research that have implemented the various methods. This book is essential for any bachelor programme in Tourism Management.

An excellent book for both undergraduate and postgraduate students. I am using the book for a course on research methods in which we discuss research approaches and epistemologies. It serves as a good basis for further reading.

The book is structured completely differently than I had expected. It is basically a glossary with definitions and historical development of research concepts. This is useful for my own reference, but not for our students, who are in need of more practical and specific ways to APPLY these concepts to their own research.
