This updated edition is a key text for students on Early Childhood degrees.   It provides useful background information around the development of special educational needs and disability (SEND), highlighting key legislation and defining key terms.    Case Studies, reflections and student activities support students to debate  the contested nature of SEND.

This well written work provides a good introduction and background to the main debates that have influenced Special Educational Needs.

New Chapter and/or Changing the focus of Chapter 9: Conclusions – the landscape of SEND policy and implementation will need updating to reflect the current position, just over 2 years later than the current edition. The reviewers felt that while the concluding chapter touches on the future of SEND, there is scope for a more critical and detailed look at the future of SEND. As well as future changes in policy and legislation, this could also include thinking about critical implication of current debates. Critical or reflective questions for students could also be added here.

?Mental health – This came up from several of the reviewers as a key topic that wasn’t covered in the current edition. Mental health ties closely with SEND and is something that would be a valuable addition to a new edition, especially as mental health support for young people is something that schools are particularly progressing over recent years. As the focus of the book is not to define the different types of SEND and mental health needs, it might be better as something interwoven across chapters (see chapter specific suggestions from reviewers) rather than as a standalone chapter.

?SEND Code of Practice Age Range - The age scope within the legislation is 0 -25, the book needs to do more to reflect this, in particular the 18-25 age range. The new Code of Practice also refers to SEND, not SEN, so this needs to be updated throughout

?New Pedagogy – the Reader Reflection boxes are really popular and we definitely would like to keep these. For the new edition, the following pedagogical features would complement these well:
Taking it Further boxes – the reviewers were keen to encourage even more critical engagement. Could some of the Reader Reflection boxes be adapted to ‘Taking it Further’ boxes aimed at higher level, more advanced students, encouraging critical thinking
Chapter summary bullet points which reflect on chapter aims
