Skills in Existential Counselling & Psychotherapy

Second Edition
  • Emmy van Deurzen - New School of Psychotherapy and Counselling, London
  • Martin Adams - New School of Psychotherapy and Regent's College, London
Additional resources:

August 2016 | 248 pages | SAGE Publications Ltd

This is the definitive practical introduction to a skills-based approach in existential therapy. Accessible for those without a philosophical background, it describes the concrete and tangible skills, tasks and interactions of existential practice. It covers the theoretical background and history of existential therapy, along with taking a phenomenological approach to practice and individual clients.

This second edition has been thoroughly updated to reflect recent thinking, and expanded to include:

* A new chapter on the applications of existential therapy in wider contexts, such as supervision and coaching.

* A new chapter covering professional issues and challenges, such as working in the NHS, engaging with research and the use of the Internet in existential therapy.

* A companion website which includes video content, featuring the authors explaining each chapter’s underpinning theory, and demonstrating the principles in practice.

A much needed resource for trainees as well as experienced practitioners keen to expand their knowledge, the authors make the existential approach accessible to all those who wish to find out what it has to offer.

In this second edition, van Deurzen and Adams have done the improbable - and improved upon an already excellent book.

Martin Milton
Regent's University London

The authors have pulled off managing to present complex ideas in a manner that is both accessible and interesting...The book is also replete with examples and material on boundaries and self-disclosure, which I think manages to sum up in the space of a few pages what most of us think but find difficult to articulate.

Dr Robert Hill
The Journal of Critical Psychology, Counselling and Psychotherapy

Emmy van Deurzen and Martin Adams have written a book with deep insights into the human nature and the existential aspects of everybodys life. Everytime I look into that book I find a sentence that really resonates with me. Students aswell as therapists and counsellors will find deep ideas in this book. I strongly recommend it to my students. Since I have German students I am not able to "force" them to read the book (as in the adoption status "essential"), but I try my very best to get them interested in the book, because I think this text is not only informative, but also kind of "nurturing" on a personal level.

Straightforward, concise and written in a manner that is accessible and relatable to client work. But then who not be a fan of the wonderful Emmy's work!

Again, like Spinelli's text, SAGE have assisted Van Deurzen and Adams to produce a fabulous accessible resource to any student who want to get to grips with both the theory and practice of Existential Counselling and Psychotherapy. One does not need to go any further than this book as all the elements are presented therein.
