Introductory Sociology
Introducing the social work student to the field of sociology, this book illustrates how sociology is connected to and fundamental to effective social work practice. Each chapter applies theory to practice and is uniquely co-written by a sociologist, social worker, and service user. A wide range of topics and subjects relevant to social work are covered, including:
- Gender
- Class
- Ethnicity and race
- Aging
- Health
- Intimacies
- Social exclusion
- Crime and deviance
- Communities
- Disability
Every chapter of the book includes further case studies, along with lots of clear definitions of terms and reflection points, making this book the essential introductory text for all social work students.
This is a great, well - structured applied sociological text full of critically applied contemporary themes relevant to everyday SW practice.
Ideal for any UG student as well as a great aid for teaching and learning as it is full of applied activities, lived narratives and implications for SW practice.
This book covers a wide range of sociological topics and underpins the importance of why the sociological mind is an intrinsic part of social work practice. The chapter on 'crime and society' is particularly useful during youth justice sessions but in particular, the chapters on 'gender' and 'poverty and exclusion' are essential texts for L5 BA.
Excellent text and essential reading for students on social work programmes.
A very comprehensive and accessible text for our students.
This book is was essential reading.
Excellent text to refresh / inform public health students on sociology
Will be suggesting that the libarary purchase a couple of copies and encourage students to purchase a copy themselves as this is a refreshing book that covers sociological themes in social work in an accessible manner that is easy to digest. It easy to follow and to see where sociological theory sit in social work
Good book, but it covers only one part of my lecture, and that in a somewhat sketchily way. The part of the theory and classics of sociology is not covered by the book. Therefore it cannot be the central reading for my course. But I ordered copies for our library.
This text provides comprehensive coverage of sociological themes of major importance in current social care practice.
