Study Skills
A Teaching Programme for Students in Schools and Colleges

There are many 'Do-it-Yourself' manuals for students and young people experiencing study skills problems. However, if this group of young people could study these books then they would already have the skills necessary! In order to use a self help manual the student needs internal motivation, the ability to self-instruct from text and the ability to put the learned strategy into place… but these are the same attributes that these students find difficult.

In this book, Pat Guy shows the reader how to teach, through self assessment, practice and confidence-building techniques, the techniques and self management required to achive independent study skills.

The programme provides a series of lesson plans making up a taught course for secondary schools, sixth form and FE colleges and PRUs. The sessions can be delivered by teachers or tutors but would ideally suit the job description of Learning Mentors whose task is to improve attendance and achievement in older students.

A good study guide for all levels of the course that I teach especially Level 3 and Level 4.

A really useful guide full of lesson plans and practical activities to support students in developing their study skills

This is a very clear & user-friendly book to support students in all areas of their study. The book is divided into 8 sections, each focusing on a specific area, from reading/writing to learning styles and exam techniques. Each section has a variety of planned sessions including learning objectives, activity ideas/printable resources, this makes each session quick and easy to embed in teaching sessions. Having the CD makes printing out activities/worksheet so easy. This has become an invaluable asset to my teaching.

Very comprehensive information for students. Ideal for 16 year olds but maybe not for older students.

Useable set of resources though not all the time and not in all occasions. Something to be dipped into and used. It may not be appropriate for use with all older learners but may be for some.

The book is laid out in an easily understood way. However, although the book says that it's for learners ranging from 14 - 20+, I found the information to be too simplistic for my learners. The resources can be adapted to suit individual needs which is an advantage.

This book has some useful information in it. As a tutor I was able to adapt some of it for use with my students. It was however aimed at a much younger audience. My students are over 19 years of age and are working at level 4.

The tips are relevant and succinct. Students will find these invaluable.

A fantastic resource for students studying at all levels in college or high schools. Contains various tests to determine learning styles, and advice on how to make the most of your individual learning style.

Some sections were relevant but for many the book was too simplistic
