Generalist Social Work Practice

Second Edition

February 2023 | 616 pages | SAGE Publications, Inc
This textbook is designed to help students develop the nine core social work competencies outlined by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) in its 2022 Educational Policy and Accreditation Standards (EPAS). Visit the 2022 EPAS website to learn more about these standards and competencies.

Generalist Social Work Practice provides students with the foundational skills and knowledge needed to serve clients across micro, mezzo and macro areas of practice. Author Janice Gasker engages students through evidence-based pedagogy that includes case studies, self-reflection opportunities, sample dialog, application and reinforcement of concepts, and an abundance of critical thinking sections, including profession practice standards such as the 2018 NASW Code of Ethics and 2022 EPAS. Updates to the Second Edition include an emphasis on Critical Race Theory, greater coverage of issues related to race and intersectionality, and a new section on institutional racism in social work. The new edition further includes an infusion of concepts related to ADEI and the addition of the PREPARE and IMAGINE models.

A great textbook! It has the depth for a graduate generalist course as well as the practicalities for undergraduate students. The addition of ADEI material is right on the money.

  • What if…Focus on Equity boxes stimulate critical thinking about case studies and the strengths and challenges of diversity.
  • Ethical Perspectives boxes directly reference the 2018 Code of Ethics set forth by the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) and provide critical thinking exercises about ethical decision-making that allow students to apply various aspects of the Code to practice scenarios.
  • Reflective Responses sections focus on specific worker characteristics (the new worker, the overwhelmed worker, the artistic worker, etc.) to give students an idea of how their own characteristics affect practice.
  • Critical Thinking and Collaborative Learning Exercises throughout chapters prompt students to work with a partner to participate in exercises and answer questions that reinforce content.
  • Self-reflection assessments allow students to take questionnaires and consider how their scores might impact practice.
  • Concurrent Considerations sections at the end of each chapter help students apply all CSWE competencies to the chapter's case study and provide curriculum matrices for faculty engaged in program renewal.
