Sara Miller McCune awarded London Book Fair Lifetime Achievement Award

April 11, 2018

Yesterday evening SAGE Publishing Founder and Executive Chairman, Sara Miller McCune, was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award at the London Book Fair International Excellence Awards 2018.

The first female academic publisher to be presented with the honor, Sara received the award in recognition of her 50 years in the publishing industry, her tireless support for social science research and her passion for philanthropy. She joins a group of 14 previously selected winners, the last three of which include: Luiz Schwarcz of Companhia das Letras (2017), Barnoness Gail Rebuck, DBE, of Penguin Random House, UK (2016) and Peter Usborne of Usborne Publishing (2015).

Dame Lynne Brindley, Master of Pembroke College, Oxford, presented the award at the ceremony attended by over 200 industry professionals. In her speech Dame Brindley outlined how Sara “has always believed passionately in the importance of knowledge and in the power of the role of publishers as disseminators of knowledge”, paying tribute to how “she wanted to inform public discourse and public policy with information based on evidence and the methods of social science.” “How prescient”, she remarked, “how enduringly important a mission this remains in today’s world of ‘fake news’ and shoddy journalism”. She concluded by saying: “Sara, your achievements are extraordinary in publishing and philanthropy. You are a role model for women in business and female entrepreneurs.”

On receiving the award, Sara remarked:

“For us at SAGE, publishing has always been about what we do and why we do it. In our case it has been about making usable knowledge more widely available. Starting with the social and behavioral sciences and growing from there, always with a desire, and at least some of what we publish can be used to inform good public policy […] Thank you once again for tonight’s honor and recognition, getting recognized by your peers is truly extraordinary.”
