Assessment for Learning and Teaching in Primary Schools

Second Edition

April 2008 | 176 pages | Learning Matters
This core text for primary trainee teachers is a clear introduction to the different kinds of assessment and their purposes. Throughout the book, tasks encourage the reader to practise assessment skills and to reflect on planning, listening, questioning, observing, diagnosing and target-setting. This second edition is referenced throughout to the 2007 QTS Standards and has been fully updated to reflect the Primary National Strategy and key initiatives such as Every Child Matters. There is increased emphasis on peer assessment and target-setting linked to personalised learning. In addition, new material on Early Years observation and foundation/core subjects has been added.

"This is an excellent text on assessment. It provides useful, practical advice, well supported by theory. There is nothing I dislike. Thank you for providing a key text for my module!" Lecturer, Leeds Metropolitan University.

A good source of knowledge and strategies for assessing children in different areas of the curriculum. Some very useful reflective tasks and practical examples throughout.

An essential text for student teachers.

A student friendly text which many of the PGCE students will find helpful.
However, it is so entwined/reliant on the 2007 Teaching Standards that big chunks of it seem out of date. It is standards led rather than content led, so the reader must sift through to find the useful information.
Needs updating.

This book is going to be extremely useful in the next few weeks when students cover the assessment for learning unit. I have already recommended to other members of staff who found the ideas easily transferable to their subject areas

A colleague who is doing his PGCE found this very useful and recommends it. I was looking for something for TAs on Assessment for Learning and though some will find it useful - most will find it hard to access.

A very practical and useful book which introduces a whole range of assessment practices. Unfortunately, it will be less useful from September 2012 when the QTS standards change.

As with the rest of the series, useful and easy to follow.
