Chris Hackley is Professor of Marketing at Royal Holloway, University of London, where he was appointed the university’s first Chair in the subject in 2004. He trained in advertising creative production in the 1980s, but then decided to become a street busker in Europe. Having failed to make a living from his music, he took another degree and went into teaching. He continued to study part time and also maintained links with advertising agencies to study the creative advertising development process, and he completed a mid life PhD in Marketing at the University of Strathclyde, Scotland, UK, in 1999. His recent writing includes the fifth edition of his jointly authored text book Advertising and Promotion, which will be published by Sage in 2001, and the second edition of Qualitative Research in Marketing and Management, published by Routledge in 2019. He continues to play his guitar and sing, and one of his songs, the CCT Blues, was the subject of a research paper by Hartmann and Ostberg (2018) published in the journal Consumption, Markets & Culture.
