Shakira Choonara

Dr. Shakira Choonara is an award-winning researcher, bold activist, and the 2017 Woman of the Year in Health, in South Africa (SA). Her most notable and influential role to date is to have been appointed to the inaugural African Union Youth Advisory Council. She is the recipient of a number of prestigious awards, including her being listed as the Africa Youth Awards 100 most influential Young Africans (2018 and 2019). In 2017, she was awarded the title of next generation female researcher by the National Research Foundation SA and emerging practitioner by the Public Health Association of SA. With a wealth of experience working on both the research and advocacy fronts, she holds a PhD in Public Health and an Honors (Cum Laude) and a Masters in Demography from the University of the Witwatersrand, SA. She is widely known and published for her work in public health in the areas of universal health coverage, youth advocacy, health governance, sexual and reproductive health rights, HIV, gender equality, disability, and malaria prevention. Editorial roles include being one of the founding co-editors of the European Union Young Leaders for Development Platform and more recently serving as the guest editor of the feminist journal AGENDA.
