Data Planet Redesign & Stats Integration

Frequently Asked Questions

Throughout 2020, the Data Planet website has been undergoing a full redesign to enhance the website’s overall look and feel in order to offer a user-friendly experience that highlights the power of the Data Planet platform, as well as enhance the interface to better serve our customers. The refreshed platform, which is scheduled to release in early 2021, will include:

  • Revised universal header introducing a larger search bar, access to “Data Basics” data literacy content, unified help options, and a larger space for institutional logos
  • New home page providing a "soft landing" for users (particularly those new to data research and Data Planet)
  • This will offer a three tabbed browsing panel (browse by subject, source, geography), featured data sets, and access to the data basics content
  • “Data Basics” reference library, which will act as an entry point for new and novice users to learn about data literacy and properly working with data
  • Updated Data Planet data viewer page, including improved left hand navigation (offering tabbed browsing, search, and drop-down menus), improved criteria selection (easier ability for multi-select, pop-out boxes for large menus of content, sleeker design), simpler iconography for tools (including an embed option), and an improved legend
  • Revised search results page to simplify results and enhance the filtering capability
  • New geography browse, allowing users to easily filter results based on geographic location, including county, city, census tract, zip code and more
  • Improved accessibility to ensure the enhancements we make to Data Planet work for all of our users

Additionally, at the time of the platform redesign release, SAGE will also integrate SAGE Stats (State, Local, and Business Stats) and U.S. Political Stats into Data Planet.  We will no longer update the data within the SAGE Stats & U.S. Political Stats platforms from that point onward. Instead, most SAGE Stats & U.S. Political Stats data will be gathered and/or re-licensed from their original source providers and made available to customers through the Data Planet platform.

The Data Planet platform’s user experience refresh will incorporate elements of both of the existing Stats platforms and will combine the best features of all three resources across one interface, allowing our users the ability to:

  • Access their data via a single platform, which should simplify user journeys, and help drive higher usage
  • Harness the power of the Data Planet platform and its data viewer
  • Compare and contrast data from even more sources, and drill down to very granular levels of detail
  • Create customized views in tables, maps, rankings, and charts
  • Export data in multiple formats
  • Export citations into a number of different citation managers
  • Create and export DataSheets into PDFs
  • Utilize future data literacy resources and tools planned for the platform

The Future of Data Planet

  1. When will the new Data Planet platform become available?
The refreshed platform is scheduled to release in early 2021.

  2. How will the official launch date of the new Data Planet platform be communicated?
Your institution will receive direct communications from SAGE regarding the launch date, as well as additional resources to help ease the transition for your institution.

  3. Will there be any changes to the Data Planet URL structure?
Yes. We will be updating the Data Planet URL from statisticaldatasets.data-planet.com to dataplanet.sagepub.com. So as to minimize any access issues, there will also be permanent URL redirects in place.

  4. Will libraries need to update their Data Planet proxy stanza?
    Data Planet
was moved into the “SAGE Publications and Journals” EZproxy stanza in 2020. For EZproxy customers hosted by OCLC, no additional action is needed - SAGE will be completing any necessary updates to the stanza on our end. For EZproxy customers not hosted by OCLC, your library should make sure that it is using the most current version of the “SAGE Publications and Journals” stanza, which includes Data Planet.

  5. Is there a suggested library catalog description?

  10. Where may I access usage statistics?
Site administrators may access usage statistics on demand via SecureCenter.

For further instruction around administrative access and usage statistics, please visit our information page here.

  11. Will training be offered to librarians about the new Data Planet platform?
Following the release of the new interface, our dedicated Library Training Team will provide scheduled webinar training sessions, as well as offer individualized sessions by request.

Be assured of our commitment to support the continued use of this resource for your library, faculty, and students. Our goal is to support the leadership of your library and how that translates to the mission of your library as a whole.

  12. What will happen to Data Planet Statistical Ready Reference?
This feature, which is currently available on the existing Data Planet platform, will not be transitioning to the new platform. We feel confident that the new user interface will be a comfortable and easy-to-navigate space for all users, from beginners to experienced researchers, removing the need for a separate simplified interface.

Should your institution have Data Planet Statistical Ready Reference included within your A to Z database listing, we do suggest you remove this by the end of the 2020 calendar year.

The Future of SAGE Stats and U.S. Political Stats

  1. What is happening to U.S. Political Stats?

The SAGE Stats & U.S. Political Stats platforms will be retiring as of summer 2021. The final update to the content on the existing platforms will occur in Q4 2020.

In early 2021, all SAGE Stats & U.S. Political Stats customers will be migrated to the Data Planet platform where they will be able to access their content via a single platform. Moving forward from then on, the content will only be updated on the Data Planet platform, where the SAGE Stats & U.S. Political Stats data will be made available.

  2. Will SAGE Stats & U.S. Political Stats be available for sale moving forward?
SAGE is no longer actively selling SAGE Stats or U.S. Political Stats to new customers.

SAGE will continue to accept renewals for existing subscriptions and annual updates to existing perpetual purchases of SAGE Stats & U.S. Political Stats through Q4 2020. After this time, existing customers will be transitioned into renewals and updates on the Data Planet platform.

  3.  Will there be a dual access period?
A six-month dual access period will begin in early 2021 for existing SAGE Stats & U.S. Political Stats customers, at which time access will remain available to the existing platforms and will be granted for the new Data Planet platform. In summer 2021, the SAGE Stats & U.S. Political Stats platforms will be retired and will no longer be accessible to users. Beyond this point, the SAGE Stats & U.S. Political Stats URLs will redirect automatically to the Data Planet homepage.

  4. Will the SAGE Stats & U.S. Political Stats content still be available?
Yes. The Data Planet Editorial Team has been ingesting SAGE Stats & U.S. Political Stats content into the Data Planet platform throughout 2020, with an aim to complete the transition of content by Q2 2021. SAGE Stats & U.S. Political Stats data will be gathered and/or re-licensed from their original source providers and made available to customers through the Data Planet platform.

  5. What will happen to the SAGE Stats & U.S. Political Stats content that is being migrated into the Data Planet platform?
In many cases this transition will provide larger, more robust data from a particular source than was previously available on the existing platforms.

The SAGE Stats & U.S. Political Stats content will be reclassified using the Data Planet subject categories. By assimilating the content into the Data Planet universe, users will have more powerful ways to browse, compare, visualize, and export this data.

For more information about SAGE Business Stats content and customers, please see question #6.

  6. What is the future of SAGE Business Stats?
The SAGE Business Stats content will move to Data Planet and become a new Premium module called Woods & Poole on the Data Planet platform. Similar to the plan for State, Local, and U.S. Political Stats content, the Data Planet Editorial team will be going directly to the original source providers of the Business Stats content (Woods & Poole Economics, Inc.) and will gather, re-license, and directly ingest the content into the Data Planet platform. The SAGE Business Stats content will be reclassified using the Data Planet subject categories and be made available for subscription or purchase as a Premium module.

For information about the SAGE Business Stats dual access period, please reference question #3.

  7. What is Data Planet Foundations?
Data Planet Foundations is a discrete product offering that will include both SAGE State, Local, and U.S. Political Stats content, as well as additional content sources from the Data Planet Core product. It will be delivered through the redesigned Data Planet interface, and will not have its own separate interface or user experience.
