Globalization
Prospects and Problems

First Edition
  • JoAnn Chirico - The Pennsylvania State University, University College

August 2013 | 552 pages | SAGE Publications, Inc
This groundbreaking text on globalization provides a comprehensive and enlightening overview of globalization issues and topics. Emphasizing the theory and methods that social scientists employ to study globalization, the text reveals how macro globalization processes impact individual lives—from the spread of scientific discourse to which jobs are more or less likely to be offshored. The author presents a clear image of “the big globalization picture” by skillfully exploring, piece by piece, a myriad of globalization topics, debates, theories, and empirical data. Compelling chapters on theory, global civil society, democracy, cities, religion, institutions (sports, education, and health care), along with three chapters on global challenges, help readers develop a broad understanding of key topics and issues. Throughout the text, the author encourages readers to relate their personal experiences to globalization processes, allowing for a more meaningful and relevant learning experience.

This book is a high quality resource, and ideal for Access to HE, foundation degree or undergraduate courses.

It examines many of the key areas of Globalisation; exploring identity, technology, education, governance and democracy. Although a fantastic book, there are limited discussions about globalisation and crime, which is one of the key issues emerging in this academic area.

It provides students with an easy to understand, textbook guide to globalisation. Examining many complex arguments and facets to the phenomenon.

This book is very useful supplementary reading for any courses such as Geography, Social Science or Politics.

This book would make an excellent backdrop to Sernau's Social Inequality in a Global Age. It provides an excellent analysis of how global policies, and social structures of inequalities, are reproduced through the lens of politics and interdependent international economies.

An excellent resource for students studying development theory or global studies. It provides a comprehensive and critical foundation and explanation for the process of globalisation and its impact on our world today.

Well written in an easily accessible format, it is a worthy and valuable companion for any student wanting to understand the international arena.

Good book, but some of my students are lower level and the reading comprehension may too high for them.

I am going to consider this book for my World Demography class I am teaching in Summer 2014, so I will let you know then.

Thanks for the copy!
