Giving specific and realistic suggestions for addressing our society's pervasive social problems
Updated with recent issues such as the national debate on health care reform, this Second Edition of How Can We Solve Our Social Problems? gives students a sense of hope by demonstrating specific, realistic steps we can take to solve some of the most pervasive social problems in America today. Author James Crone maintains a sense of sociological objectivity throughout and helps students realize that we can take steps to solve such key social problems as poverty, racial and ethnic inequality, unequal education, and environmental issues. The book's first two chapters define “social problem,,” provide a theoretical background, discuss the daunting barriers we face in attempting to solve social problems, and demonstrate how sociology can help.

The most interesting part of this book is an introduction to social problems from a different approach than standard textbooks in the field. This book draws attention mainly on rational solutions to social problems. Although the book includes an analysis mainly from the perspective of the United States, it may also be useful as a reference material for teachers and researchers in other countries.
Feedback from another professor proved the students disliked the textbook in their course.
This is a useful textbook in that it supplies mostly reasonable solutions to existing social problems.
I was looking for a supplementary book for my Social Problems class. This book was too involved and I need one to focus on a specific problem such as globalization.
I was looking for a more traditional social problems textbook. This textbook would be a good supplement, if I had more time to use it or slightly better students who could take on an extra book.
Practical approach focused on addressing problems with appropriate policy and social action.
I like the way each chapter looks at a social problem from the four theoretical perspectives.
Absolutely wonderful and students really love the book!
I like this text very much but need a bit more content to adopt it as a stand alone text for students who are new to sociology.
