Medicines Management in Children's Nursing

March 2011 | 224 pages | Learning Matters
Children's nurses must develop the crucial skills of correct medicines management and calculations in order to provide safe care to their patients. This book specifically supports pre-registration students in meeting the required competencies for medicines management needed to pass formal assessment and qualify as a children's nurse. It is clearly structured around the NMC Essential Skills Clusters for medicines management, covering legal aspects, drugs calculations, administration, storage, record keeping, introductory pharmacology, patient communication and contextual issues in medication. The book is written in user-friendly language and uses patient scenarios to explain concepts and apply theory to practice.

I feel that my adult nursing students would only use a text like this very rarely but would be a good text in the library for them to research with if they came across in critical care areas children and were involved in medicines management.
A more focussed textbook for students and lecturers involved and undertaking the child health branch of the nursing degree programme, but a book for all nursing libraries in my view as medicines management is an essental skill.
The book in my opionion is well written and easy to use, I particularly like the chapters on calculating children's medicines, holistic care and treatment options and medicines adminstration....the chapter on partnership is also a very important chapter.

It is very user friendly with clear explanations of the concepts of medicine safety and management for children. Excellent, thought provoking case studies and activities allow students to understand their accountability and responsibilities of care.

This is an excellent textbook. It is very user friendly and gives the student the opportunity to develop a firm understanding of the issues around children and medicines. I found the layout to be very logical and the content would encourage further exploration of he subject matter by the student. I also feel that this is a book that would be a very useful addition to any paediatric ward as a clear resource for guidance. I did particlarly like the issues raised around calculations. I have encounterd other books in this series and feel that this book not only comliments those but is an excellent stand alone book, that is well planned and easy to navigate and very pertinant to todays environment of safety in practice.

One of few textbooks available on the complex issue of medicines management for children. The activities are especially useful.
