Logically set out, provides appropriate levels of knowledge relating to physical health needs of individuals experiencing mental health problems. Highlights all key physical concerns.
the chapters are well laid out, it is user friendly and contains the information that is important for student mental health nurses.
The action learning points in each chapter provide useful reflective learning opportunities for the reader, allowing them space to relate the theory discussed to their own experiences of practice.
The 'useful resources' at the end of each chapter are just that. They provide relevant and credible further reading for students to explore the topics further.
The book is written in a style that is easy to engage with and each subject is broken down into small chunks so as not to overwhelm.
useful reading - accessible style - I'm sure this will have a positive impact on those who read it
We will be using this text as a core text in Stage 2 and 3 of the BN mental health nursing.
I am adopting this book for delivery within lectures to pre- and post-registration nursing students. The mental health nursing practitioner's knowledge of physical health issues is now as important as psychological health. This text is a good starting point to either inform or refresh information associated with the physiological welfare of people with mental health issues.
This book is a must for any mental health nurse! The physical care needs of our service users remains an agenda item as we continue to fall somewhat short of the standard required in this area. This is an improtant area for staff to embrace given the shift in how those with physical health needs are now often managed within mental health care settings.
As someone who works and teaches in mental health I would really recommend this book. I found it easily accessible and something I would advise my students to access in their careers. I can see using this book on a regular basis, in fact I already have.
Operating Department Practitioners (ODPs) are increasingly caring for surgical patients who have mental health problems. Presently there is no requirement for ODPs to have any knowledge around mental health. However this book provides an excellent resource for those who wish to know more.
A clear and understandable explaination of the importance of attending to the physical health of patients with mental health problems
An excellent text for both mental health and adult nurses working within the mental health setting. It has been particulary informative in developing our understanding of the complex nature of physical well bieng often negelected within mental health and the challenges faced by those with severe and enduring mental disorders in ensuring their physical health needs are met
I have placed this on my essential reading list as it offers a broad overview of the physical health problems people with mental health concerns can encounter. I would recommend this for both pre and post registration courses.
I will include this as part of the recommended reading list for the next time this module will run
This book is going to be very useful. It is clearly and concisely written, with a pleasant, friendly tone. The information and learning will be very useful for pre-reg students.
Will recommend as supplemetary text alongside core text of profession
A useful book that links theories to practice throughout by the use of action learning points which contain reflective exercises and case examples. This is a very practical book that explores the main physical health issues that people with mental health problems may encounter. This is a useful resource for trainees and practitioners in all fields of nursing and in a variety of settings. The learning outcomes at the start of each chapter are useful to help focus the reader. This is an excellent resource that a reader can dip into as the need arises .
Excellent source of information for an area of practice in mental health care that is finding greater prominence.
Could there be an additional chapter on eating disorders?
This is a long awaitied text for those caring for people with mental health problems. It provides some very useful insight into individual needs and can be extremely beneficial to adult students
