This new edition of the book reflects on contemporary issues in the field of early childhood studies and engages students in concepts that relate to young children. In offering theoretical perspectives of early childhood the book also draws students into critical reflection on practice. This should be a key text for all studying and teaching in the field of early years.
An excellent text for introducing the early years to specialists and non-specialists. It offers the student a rounded view of early years in the context of political agendas, while still maintaining the child at the centre of provision and understanding.
Fully up to date with an accessible layout and style and a balance between current research, theory and practice, this new edition will prove to be a valuable resource for all students and practitioners interested in early childhood.
With its interlinked themes and different theoretical perspectives, this book will be of interest to both students and practitioners, prompting new thoughts on how practice can be improved and developed.
This is the book we currently use of our Level C module. It is an up-to-date excellent guide for students who aim to become practitioners and are at the beginning of their studies. This is a great textbook that brings together theory and practice. Its rich content consists of both literature-based and research-based paradigms along with practical helpful tips, the best source for the foundations in Early Childhood education.Strongly recommended.
A great introduction to the field of Early years Studies
Useful overview of key topics, in an easy to understand manner. I will recommend this for summer reading for both year one and year 2.
This is a good all round book - however because if covers such a range it does so only at a limited level. Students would therefore need to research areas of particular interest further, but this book does do well to signpost them in order to assist with this.
An informative and practical guide that is helpful for adults entering early education.
The scope of this book, in my opinion, is above and beyond that which is expected of my Level 3 students. However, I found it very useful for my own additional reading.
The course has ended and i have adopted it for Our new Early Years Educator qualification.
Essential reading that has clear text offering a rounded view of Early Years. The information is current and relevent which enables students to fully grasp the differing concepts and approaches. I really like the reflection areas that test understanding and assist with areas that may be harder to grasp. Overal a really lovely text book.
Some really useful chapters regarding the ever shifting paradigm of Childhood, policy and what constitutes effective practice.
Questions and exercises at the end of each chapter have proved useful for encouraging debate within sessions
A good introduction to many of the topics covered in a Foundation Degree in Early Childhood Studies and other related courses. This text provides students with a good grounding in key concepts.
An excellent introductory text that I recommend to all my first year students.
This is an excellent book that is very accessible for students. I believe this will be a very useful resource for our students. It has been fully updated and offers students balance between and knowledge and practice.
A good text for undergraduate students in childhood studies
This is an excellent text for undergraduate students. It relates to theoretical values, while critically analysing what this means in current day practice. There are references to further reading/information on particular points, which students should find useful. The way the chapters have been presented within the four sections help students to distinguish between different concepts.
It is helpful to have all the references at the end of the book rather than after each chapter.
I would have liked to have seen some references to Welsh educational policy.
A useful textbook to assist in the preparation for course delivery on Early Childhood studies.
A range of childhood issues considered in a critically reflective yet accessible approach. A good balance achieved between theory and practice.
