Popular Education Practice for Youth and Community Development Work

June 2012 | 144 pages | Learning Matters
Drawing on the legacy of Paulo Freire and the insights of Antonio Gramsci, this book provides new ways of working with communities which put people at the heart of the development agenda. In addition, it offers a strong theoretical basis for action and an insight into the practical application of popular education methods and is based upon strong traditions of practice experience from both the developing and developed worlds.

The book is structured so that the theory and practice are integrated. Each chapter provides key discussion points, practice examples, learning activities and a summary of content and learning points.

I will be recommending this book for level 5 community involvement module students. The chapter headings and objectives make it easy to navigate and the use of case studies along with a resource section provide students with a wide range of examples of practice to learn and draw upon.

A good start suggesting the definition of critical pedagogy in enabling students to see their academic learning from a particular perspective. Three key sections of theoretical background, practice with an accompanying resources section for further reading.
Explores key concepts such as community development, social capital, social change theory along with some key theorists.

The book offers plenty of theoretical underpinnings and up-to-date examples/practices. It provides an insight into empowerment and social change, and is accessible.

I like the way this book integrates theory with practice. The case studies illustrate very well the different theoretical approaches available to anyone 'who still wants to change the world'. Really interesting and useful.

As expected from the Empowering Youth and Community Work Practice series by Learning Matters, an excellent text that develops students understanding of concepts and how these apply in practice.

Clearly written and presented, Beck and Purcell cover the main areas and provide a very sound platform for further reading and research.
