A comprehensive book that enables the reader to easily understand the principles of qualitative research. David Silverman’s books have been indispensable throughout my own research – brilliant!

Many years of teaching how to do qualitative research to management and social science research students means that I always recommend David Silverman’s Qualitative Research as the the go to text. It is simply the best.

This book contains everything that a qualitative researcher needs to know and a quantitative researcher needs to learn. Written by the world-renowned authorities in their fields, this edition covers all issues relevant to qualitative research, from choosing the research topic through fieldwork techniques, analytical approaches, and the ways to write it all up.

Silverman provides a welcome new edition to an accessibly written, coherently organised and comprehensive introduction to qualitative research. It is an interesting and informative read with clear and concise explanations and is an essential for researchers using qualitative methods and analysing data.

Gareth Addidle

Want to understand qualitative research? This is the must-have book for you. This 4th edition is unquestionably the very best work on qualitative research that I have read, with an expanded section on new technologies.  I wholeheartedly recommend this book to students, researchers, policy makers and everyone with an interest in qualitative research.

Susan Danby

The fourth edition continues to be of great use to students studying research methods, the stature of this book speaks for itself. Students who are sometimes daunted by a plethora of available research methods can rely on this thorough and readable text to guide them through conducting their own projects.

Silverman's book is good for those wanting to engage with understanding both quantitive and qualitative approaches in research. The chapters are comprehensively written and introduces the reader to issues and ideas in research with good examples of research theories and practices. It is succinct, detailed and authoritative, which most readers will call upon as their reference guide.

This book is a very useful reference for students embarking on their first foray into qualitative research methods. It covers a range of qualitative research methods and is pitched at a level that enables students to grasp the key terms and concepts discussed. This is a book I would definitely recommend for students and as such has been adopted as part of the indicative reading for this module

Key features
The new section on Expanding Technologies containing four new chapters covering the key online data gathering / analysis methods assists PG students who increasingly conduct their research online (as it's cheap and is easier to access certain populations) yet need the specifics on how to tackle this.

The new boxes in each chapter feature practical tips, summaries and lists to make this the student's constant companion by providing those out in the field doing research with 'how to' guidance, not just justifications of 'why' to choose a particular method.

Mirroring the PG research journey through the dissertation, the new structure is more logical. Opening with foundational issues - ethics and general frameworks, the book now introduces more basic methods first (interviews and focus groups) before moving to the more interpretive, in-depth methods (textual analysis, ethnography), and concludes with a full section on analysis.

The ToC is a who's who of top scholars and each also gives an annotated guide to the key literature in their field, which students can refer to and import into their bibliography providing a robust dissertation reference list that they can cite appropriately to underscore their research's authority.
