Reviewer Rewards

We are grateful for the work that all of our reviewers do to help authors enhance and develop their papers and support the integrity of the publishing process. We recognize and reward the invaluable contribution you provide when you review for SAGE. We also acknowledge the importance of serving as a reviewer to your own career and field of study, and provide you with resources in becoming a reviewer, writing a review, and getting credit for your reviews.

Benefits to reviewing

The quality and integrity of published research depends on researchers contributing their expertise in the form of peer review. By fulfilling your professional responsibility to review, you contribute to publishing new insights that lead to advancements in your field. By evaluating papers and providing feedback to authors, you glean valuable skills that can then be applied when writing your own papers and communicating with colleagues or students. Reviewing is also a good way to remain informed about the latest developments in the field. Having information about serving as a reviewer on your curriculum vitae or reviewer record can be key in securing a promotion or getting invitations to serve on editorial boards.

What rewards does SAGE offer reviewers?

We at SAGE are very happy to offer you the following rewards every time you review for a SAGE journal:

  • 25% discount on all SAGE books.
  • Free access to SAGE Journals for 60 days. This will give you access to content from 1999-present for more than 1000 journals across the humanities, social sciences, science, technical and medical fields, including new issues published during the free 60-day period.

You will receive instructions on how to access these rewards via email once you have successfully submitted your review to SAGE Track. If you have any difficulty accessing these rewards, please contact onlinesupport@sagepub.co.uk.

Because much of the work done by reviewers is by its very nature anonymous, some journal editors choose to publish a list of their reviewer’s names annually to thank this group openly for their hard work. Therefore, if you review for a SAGE journal, it is possible your name will be published in a Reviewer Thank You list. If you do not want your name to be published, please contact the journal editor.

How to get credit for your reviews

As part of our commitment to supporting the reviewer community, we are partnered with Publons, a service that gets you recognition for your peer review contributions. You can also use ORCID to gain recognition for your reviews.

If you need to provide evidence that you have reviewed for a SAGE journal, such as for funding, promotions, jobs, or green card applications, you can download the record of your activity on Publons. Alternatively, you can share the email sent to you confirming your review has been received.

What is Publons?

Publons is a free service that enables you to effortlessly record, verify, and showcase your peer review contributions. Publons records the number of papers you have reviewed for a journal while maintaining reviewer anonymity in accordance with each journal’s review policy.

Our partnership with Publons enables you to quickly and easily get the recognition for your work that you deserve. Browse the list of SAGE journals that are integrated with Publons.

For more information please see the SAGE-Publons information page or check out the Publons FAQ for reviewers.

How can I add reviews to my Publons profile?

For our integrated journals:
•    You can opt-in to receive recognition on Publons when you submit your review
•    You’ll receive an email inviting you to set up a profile on Publons and claim your review
•    You can choose the ‘auto-add’ option in your profile, meaning your reviews for this and any other integrated journals will automatically be added to your Publons profile in the future, with no further action required from you

For any journal:
•    You can set up your profile on Publons
•    You can manually add any reviews completed from throughout your entire career by forwarding your reviewer receipt email to reviews@publons.com or filling out the online form from your account

What is ORCID?

ORCID is a service which allows you to keep a public record of your academic contributions across disciplines, borders, and time in one place.

As a reviewer, you can use your ORCID to gain recognition of your peer reviewing activities via Publons. We also recommend ORCID’s tips for building an authoritative ORCID record.
