Teaching Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling in Primary Schools

Teaching Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling in Primary Schools

Second Edition

February 2016 | 240 pages | Learning Matters
Trainee and beginning teachers often find the teaching of grammar, punctuation and spelling especially challenging as they are not confident in their own knowledge.  This popular text explores and provides the subject knowledge you will need to teach grammar, punctuation and spelling and gives guidance on how to teach it.

The text is really accessible and includes lots of examples and teaching ideas, enabling you to approach teaching with ease.  Detailed examples of effective lessons show you how to engage children’s interest in some of the more formal aspects of writing and throughout, activities and practical examples demonstrate how you can translate this learning into the classroom.

This second edition has been updated in line with the new National Curriculum for Key Stages 1 and 2.  A new chapter is included to explore the national SPAG tests in primary schools.  The tests are explained and advice on how to approach them is included.  The text will enable you to teach grammar, punctuation and spelling effectively supporting your class in all their writing, across the primary curriculum.

Chapter 1: Teaching Grammar

Brilliant addition to the course - one of the few books which looks at literacy holistically and helps ITE students see how to teach these skills effectively.

Found this book useful as it provides guidance on teaching grammar, punctuation and spelling, which I can adapt when encouraging literacy with Level 2 FE students.

The text seems to have a lot of positive features. I really like the very clear explanations of a broad range of grammar, punctuation and spelling features which will certainly help to support the subject knowledge development of our trainee teachers. I also like the contextualised examples and activities provided many of which can be easily adapted for use with adult learners. The only criticism I have is that, of course, its main target audience is primary teachers where our trainee teachers will be working with learners aged 14 plus. However, I have added the text to the Cert Ed and PGCE reading lists for the module entitled ‘Literacy Theories and Frameworks’. As it has a primary focus, I have asked the library to treat is as ‘additional’ reading rather than ‘essential’ reading. I will certainly be looking at Sage to see if they have other texts which focus specifically at literacy/English teaching for 14 years plus as I am impressed with the quality and accessibility of this text.
