The Journal of Process Mechanical Engineering is a Scopus indexed journal which publishes high-quality papers covering a broad area of mechanical engineering activities associated with the design and operation of process equipment.

"The process mechanical industries are fundamental to providing society with its basic needs in a sustainable and environmentally friendly manner. Be it process to refine oil products, produce food, medicine, personal products, or indeed machinery - all are produced in vast quantities using specialised equipment. With advents in computing, Internet of Things (IoT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI), there is a rising opportunity to enhance these processes and machinery. It is the fundamentals and application of these processes and equipment, their design, operation, and maintenance, that sit within the scope of the Journal of Process Mechanical Engineering, Part E of the Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.

We welcome papers from academia and industry which cover broad area of process mechanical engineering. These could be review, research or application papers. Papers related to fundamental understanding of processes applicable to wide range of process mechanical engineering are especially welcome. Our focus is on producing special issues related to upcoming topics of Process Mechanical Engineering and would welcome all proposals which include Digitalisation, IoT, AI, and new technologies in this area. We can confirm that at all stages in the consideration of your paper we will endeavour to act as speedily as possible whilst maintaining academic rigour.

In order to enhance outreach of the journal and to maintain and improve quality of published papers we welcome experts in topics broadly related to Process Mechanical Engineering to apply for positions of Associate Editors, Editors of Special Issues and Reviewers." Professor Kim Tiow Ooi, Nanjang Technological University, Singapore and Prof Ahmed Kovacevic, City, University London, UK.

Special Issues open for Submission:

The Journal of Process Mechanical Engineering is a SCI, Scopus and WOS indexed journal which publishes original research, critical reviews, technical notes and case studies that advance the science, design, and application of process mechanical engineering. The journal aims to bridge fundamental research with industrial practice, addressing both established methods and emerging frontiers to meet global engineering challenges.

We welcome contributions that highlight interdisciplinary integration, sustainability, and innovation in mechanical processes across scales, from nano to macro, and across sectors, including manufacturing, energy, healthcare, and infrastructure.

Areas of Focus Include (but are not limited to):

  • Process Design and Mechanical Systems Integration: Process Mechanical engineering in the design, optimization, and control of equipment, systems, and workflows.
  • Thermo-Fluid and Energy Systems: Fluid machinery, thermal systems, multiphase and micro/nano fluidics, and processes for sustainable and hybrid energy technologies.
  • Advanced Manufacturing and Industry 4.0+: Additive and hybrid manufacturing, powder processing, machining, and milling, along with robotics, cyber-physical systems, and human–machine collaboration.
  • Data-Driven Process Engineering: Applications of AI, machine learning, digital twins, modelling, and predictive maintenance for process optimization and decision support.
  • Materials and Functional Processing: Processing of metals, alloys, polymers, fibres, nanomaterials, and multifunctional or bio-inspired materials, with emphasis on process–structure–property relationships and application performance.
  • Bioengineering and Biomedical Processes: Design, optimization, and control of bioprocesses, medical devices, tissue engineering systems, and drug delivery processes.
  • Sustainable and Circular Engineering: Process innovation for renewable energy integration, energy efficiency, waste reduction, recycling, and circular economy approaches.
  • Smart and Virtual Manufacturing: IoT-enabled manufacturing, big data analytics, cloud-based process monitoring, and simulation via digital and virtual environments.
  • Instrumentation, Control, and Safety: Development and application of instrumentation, sensors, control strategies, process safety, and risk management in mechanical processes.
  • Extreme and Specialized Applications: Mechanical process engineering for aerospace, nuclear systems, space exploration, and operations in extreme or hazardous environments.

Mission Statement

Our mission is to foster a global platform for researchers, engineers, and practitioners to share cutting-edge developments in mechanical processes. By emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches and solutions to current and future challenges, the journal seeks to contribute to sustainable development, industrial innovation, and the advancement of mechanical engineering worldwide.
