Qualitative Methodology
A Practical Guide

Additional resources:

February 2014 | 288 pages | SAGE Publications Ltd
Fresh, insightful and clear, this exciting textbook provides an engaging introduction to the application of qualitative methodology in the real world.

Expert researchers then trace the history and philosophical underpinnings of different methodologies, explore the specific demands each places upon the researcher and robustly set out relevant issues surrounding quality and rigor.   Featured methodologies include action research, discourse analysis, ethnography, grounded theory, case studies and narrative inquiry.

This practical book provides a helpful guide to the research process - it introduces the relevant methods of generating, collecting and analysing data for each discrete methodology and then looks at best practice for presenting findings. This enables new researchers to compare qualitative methods and to confidently select the approach most appropriate for their own research projects.

Key features include:
  • Summary table for each chapter - allowing quick checks to test knowledge
  • 'Window into' sections - real world examples showing each methodology in action
  • Student activities
  • Learning objectives
  • Full glossary
  • Annotated suggestions for further reading
  • Links to downloadable SAGE articles
  • Links to relevant websites and organizations

This is an invaluable resource for students and researchers across the social sciences and a must-have guide for those embarking on a research project.

A New Era of Qualitative Research

Of the many books about qualitative research, this one is particularly engaging to read. It will be useful to the novice as an introductory text and to experienced researcher as a refresher. The book's structure allows the reader to compare the characteristics of each method and examples of how each could be employed.

Here is something really worthwhile but rarely seen: a useful book on qualitative research methods.

Professor Ruth Rentschler OAM
School of Management and Marketing, Deakin University

This book offers a welcome focus on the theoretical underpinnings of the major qualitative methods allowing students to thoroughly engage with the rationality behind the approach to analysis. Each chapter is full of useful examples of research and the extensive references give students plenty of guidance on what to read next. This is a very useful text for developing research awareness and critical thinking skills, not just because it offers students to reflect explicitly on a critical response to the content, but because of its explanatory writing style.

Dr. Joanna Ferrie, Lecturer in Social Research Methods
University of Glasgow

I recommend Qualitative Methodology: A Practical Guide as an invaluable resource for students, instructors, thesis supervisors, and researchers in social sciences and applied fields such as education.

This is a very useful guide to the wide range of qualitative methodologies and methods that are often used. It links well with analysis of findings and can be of use to a wide range of Postgraduate students and also some Undergraduates.

A great introductory book for students who are making decisions which qualitative method and methodology to employ for their research. It is a solid overview of most popular qualitative methods. The chapters are well discussed and key issues for each method are explored.

Several articles, e.g."Grounded Theory" and "Methodology and Methods" will be recommended for further reading. The articles as well as the whole book provide complex and extensive informations presented in a comprehensible manner. Rubrics like "leaerning objecitves" and "key points" frame the texts and make them accessible for students with different research epxerience.
